After a short walk in Coventry you will notice, that elephants are everywhere in the City. They are just charming - but what are they doing in this city?

The elephant is in the City's coat of arms and there is no doubt, that is a popular image. There are pictures, mosaics and carvings everywhere. But my favourites are the metal bolllards in the heart of the city. On the top of each of them, there is a round, smooth and calm elephant baby. It is just so good to stroke them gently as you pass by.
But what are they doing in Coventry? No one knows for sure. They have been here for centuries, and people always adored them, just like me. Some people say, they symbolise strength. In the medieval times people thought that an elephant could kill a dragon to protect their baby. They often depicted them carried a castle on their back; maybe the Castle of Coventry. But one thing is sure: the inhabitants of Coventry always loved to see themselves as a strong and wealthy community and there is no stonger animal than these cutie pies.


A városba érkezve azonnal feltűnik az embernek, hogy itt mindenütt elefántok vannak. Sok képen, mozaikon, faragványon feltűnik szerte Coventryben. Az én kedvenceim a fémoszlopokon lévő bumfordi alakok, amelyek városszerte védik a járdákat a szabálytalanul parkolóktól. Lehetetlen úgy elmenni mellettük, hogy az ember ne simítson végig gömbölyű hátukon. Az elefánt Coventry címeréből került a város fő díszítőelemei közé, de neki nem tudja, hogy vajon miért ő a település szimbóluma. Egyesek úgy vélik, hogy egy középkori legenda miatt került ide, amely szerint az elefánt a legerősebb állat, amely még a sárkányt is képes elpusztítani, különösen ha az az elefántborjat fenyegeti. Valószínű, hogy a városlakók, akik egy gazdag és erős közösség tagjai voltak, szívesen látták magukat elefántként, erőtől duzzadva magasodni a környező falvak fölé.

This is always a big problem when we have visitors in Coventry. Their main aim is to meet with me and my family. But they would like to see something interesting, and it is understandable. They travelled through Europe, and are eager to see something really nice.

When we are tourists we all look for something astonishing and unique.
In Coventry this is a very sensitive topic. As you may know, the main part of the city was destroyed in 1940. In just one night more than four thousand homes and historicly very important buildings just disappeared by the brutal attack of the Nazi Luftwaffe.
Just a very few old thing remained - three Spires of three different City Cathedrals, the Spires of Hope - as they say, a nice old street and some old building. Although they had highly sentimental value, if you are a tourist, you can look around in one hour and you have seen everything of importance. Some may say that city is quite modern, offers no excitment and is not worth travelling here. But is this true? I don't think so. I love to live here, and in the last two years I have seen many faces of the city. So, I decided to show my Coventry in this blog. The little exciting things, the friendly faces of the inhabitants; every little part that makes me smile - and maybe you too.

Mindig nagy gondban vagyok, amikor látogatók jönnek hozzánk Coventrybe. Persze, tudom, az elsődleges céljuk, hogy minket meglátogassanak. De ha már keresztülutazták fél Európát, szeretnének látni valamit szép és érdekes dolgot is. Amikor ugyanis az ember turistáskodik, valami különleges és egyedit szeretne látni. És bizony Coventryben ez elég érzékeny téma. Biztosan sokan hallottak már róla, hogy a város nagy része elpusztult 1940-ben a német légierő támadása következtében. Nagyon kevés dolog maradt meg és azok mind nagyon fontosak a városnak. A legghíresebb a város három katedrálisának három tornya (a remény tornyai, ahogy itt nevezik őket azóta is) néhány öreg épület és egy középkori utca. Bár az angolok ezeket nagyra értékelik - turistaszemmel egyetlen óra alatt mindet be lehet kebelezni. A szigorúan vett belvároson kívül pedig a város (ami amúgy nem kicsit) meglehetős modern és unalmas. De vajon tényleg az? Őszintén szólva nekem nem az. Az elmúlt két évben sok arcát láttam Coventrynek, ezért úgy gondoltam, hogy megmutatom az én kedvenc részleteimet, amelyek mindig mosolyt csalnak az arcomra. És remélem, hogy másoknak is tetszeni fognak.
