Crying Poppies

Flowers have power. You can express your feelings with them, your love, your sorrow or your grief. But I had never heard about the meaning of the poppies. When we arrived to the UK, I didn't understand why there were a lot of poppies pinned the people's coats. So I asked one guy who sold little pin-poppies, what it meant. He told me that after the first World War all the French and German battlefields where the soldiers died were covered with poppies, because this was the only plant that could grow on this barren land. Since then the scarlet red colour of this flowers is associated with blood and the lost lives of the soldiers and poppies became the symbol of the soldiers, who died on duty. On the 11th of November the UK celebrates Rememberance Day, when everyone can think about the loved ones in their families who died at war. At this time of the year every memorial place receives a new wreath, made of poppies to remember the soldiers who died for their country.

 A virágoknak mágikus erejük van - ezerféle érzelmet tudunk velük kifejezni. Szerelmet, vágyakozást, gyászt - de soha nem hallottam korábban arról, hogy a pipacs törékeny virágai is jelentéssel bírnak. Amikor Angliába érkeztünk, feltűnt, hogy nagyon sok ember kabátján látok pici műanyag pipacs-kitűzőt. Fogalmam sem volt róla, hogy mit jelenthet ez, így amikor találkoztam egy árussal, megkérdeztem tőle. Ő mesélte el nekem, hogy november 11. nagyon fontos ünnep Angliában, az Emlékezés napja, amikor minden család a háborúban életét vesztett családtagját, ősét siratja, rá emlékezik. És miért pont pipaccsal? Hát mert az első világháborúban a vérrel borított harcmezőkön ez volt az egyetlen virág, amelyik megélt, virággal borítva sok-sokezer halott katona jeltelen sírját. A vörös virágok olyanok voltak, mint a lángoló, vérrel borított gyászmezők. A pipacsokat amúgy veterán katonák árulják, és a befolyt jövedelem a katonaözvegyek családjaihoz kerül. A kitűzőt pedig  nem csak egy nap hordják az angolok, mint mi a kokárdát, hanem heteken át - még a tévébemondók, és a királyi család tagjai is. A háborús emlékművekhez pedig ilyenkor ugyanilyen pipacsokból font koszorú kerül. Az összes katona emlékére, aki a hazájáért áldozta életét.Ezt a lebombázott Coventry katedrálisban fotóztam.
